EPUB2 or EPUB3?
IDPF (International Digital Publishing Forum) released the EPUB3
specification in October 2011; replacing the 2.0.1 spec. EPUB3 adds support
for HTML5, SVG, MathML, and more. Tool and reader support for
EPUB3 is still lacking (although it’s getting better!). For now use EPUB2
unless you know that your target device/application supports EPUB3.
Viewing the Contents of an EPUB
After creating an EPUB, you’ll likely need to open and “fix” little formatting
problems. Just change the “.epub” extension to “.zip” and use an archive
extraction tool (assuming it’s not DRM’d). Putting it back together
after modifying the contents can be tricky (not just a matter of “zipping”
it back up). Best to use a tool that can open EPUBs:
