Managing updates by everyone
Collaborating on document development produces an excellent repository
of information. The level of collaboration, and the controls put in
place, depend on the environment and audience requirements. This
presentation discusses how to manage updates by subject matter experts
and community authors. We examine the questions of copyright
and intellectual property, how to monitor the updates made, and some
permission schemes for controlling the editing rights.
Doc sprints
A doc sprint is a short period of time when a group of people collaborate
to write a specific set of documents. We will examine the reasons
for holding such an event and the results of some recent doc sprints.
The references section includes links to detailed articles on planning
and running a doc sprint.
Flickr
We will take a quick look at using shared photographs from Flickr to
engage your readers.
YouTube
Adding a video is a good way of making your documentation more attractive,
informative and engaging. We will look at the example of some
release notes, where the technical writers re-use a video produced by
the marketing team, thus making good use of the effort spent in producing
the video.
Twitter
Twitter opens the way for innovative technical communication techniques.
In this presentation, we discuss these ideas:
−−
Using Twitter as a medium for release notes.
−−
Inviting customers to Tweet their hints and tips about your products.
−−
Incorporating Twitter activity streams in your documentation.
−−
Rewarding the community for sharing their tips.
You will see how to:
−−
Embed a live Twitter stream onto your page.
−−
Provide a link that prepopulates a tweet for your readers, giving them
the option to tweet your suggested words or change the words before
tweeting.
−−
Build a Twitter widget.
Gamification
Gamification is a current buzz word in user interface design as well as
technical communication. It means the application of game techniques
to things that are not games, such as software and documentation.
We will see a configuration guide that includes some of the features of a
game. The guide uses Twitter to add interactivity to the documentation,
and specially-designed graphics to add appeal to the pages. Humorous
