Technical writing for the machinery
industry in India: a success story

Introduction
PackSys Global India (PSI) is part of the PackSys Global group of companies
owned by Brückner Technology Holding (Germany). We have
more than 50 years of experience in developing, manufacturing & marketing
complex machineries globally. PackSys Global (India) is an engineering
services arm of PackSys Global (Switzerland). Under the brand
Conea, PackSys Global (India) offers design and documentation services
to group companies as well as to other machinery manufacturers.
In this document we give an overview of our current standards of technical
documentation @ conea and the organisational environment enabling
this.
The dynamics of the environment at machine manufacturer’s and
their customers, namely the increasing complexity of the machine, the
shrinking time for machine development, customer expectations and
the increasing focus on cost reduction made us to revamp our existing
documentation processes and standards. We did an analysis and identified
the areas on which we need to improve our documentation services.
A summary of this analysis is given in the below table.
This analysis gave us a clear indication of the direction which we need
to take for revamping our documentation services. We had to invest not
only in software but also in the complete environment surrounding our
services. Some of the environmental factors were already available, but
we had to adapt/add some others.
The conea technical documentation environment
1. Staff know-how:
The best method to impart domain knowledge is to give exposure to the
team on the machine which they are documenting. We organise regular
visits for the documentation team to customer sites in India and also to
Switzerland for training on the machines.
The second most important skill is the core technical writing skill. The
technical writers undergo training through the TcTrainNet – International
training and certification program by tekom. In addition to this,
we also organise regular English and German Language Certification
Courses for the writers.
