3 - THE DIFFICULTY OF SEPARATING FROM HER OWN CHILD IN THE POSTPARTUM PERIOD
Marcella Marcone Psychotherapist and Psychoanalyst, Milano (Milano - IT)
In the prevention of the affective and cognitive
problems of the child the quality of the relationship
with the mother both during pregnancy and
starting from birth must be taken into consideration.
The capacity of containing another human being
and of recognising him/her as an individual flows
from feeling well with oneself. Many mothers on
the contrary are not well, because they feel they
lost their identity both as the pregnant woman,
who has been carrying within herself for nine
months or as the woman she used to be before
her pregnancy.
During her pregnancy the woman has experienced
in a more o less clear way an inner bustle,
which has called back many aspects of her
past, to be now merged into her current reality.
In particular she has to cope with the return of
the repressed related to the separation with her
own mother, when she was born, and with the
separations / losses which followed and which
she experienced either in a real way or in her
121
imagination. This experiences have produced in
her fears and anxieties, which interfere and influence
the separation from the baby as a part of
herself, which took place with the birth of the
baby.
In psychoanalysis the source of such problems
is to be found in the reactivation of the feeling of
castration typical of the woman during puerperium.
In the present work, after a short explanation
about the development of such concepts in
Freud, I shall try to highlight which aggressivesexual
desires the pregnancy allows to fulfil, and
which unconscious nuclei cause the malaise the
woman experiences after her child’s birth.
The illustration of a clinical case enables to follow
through the words of an analysand in the indepth
examination of the themes studied in a
theoretical way and to highlight how the gradual
permeabilization of the unconscious nuclei
allows an investment on the child considered as
an entity separated from his mother.
