Abstract
The quality of child attachment is related to the
characteristics of the earliest interactions and
emotional regulation with caregivers (Evans &
Porter, 2009; Beebe et al., 2010). The aim of this
study is to evaluate if mother-infant’s affective
states and the quality of their coordination are
associated with the quality of child attachment.
40 mother-infant dyads were recruited (mean
age = 34 years). At 9 months of infants’ age, interactions
were video-recorded and coded by
the Weinberg e Tronick’s (1999) Infant and
Caregiver Engagement Phases to which some
changes were made. When children were 14
months old, their attachment to the mother has
been evaluated by the Strange Situation Procedure
(Ainsworth et al, 1978).
Preliminary results, concerning 33 dyads,
show that 23 children were securely attached to
their mother and 10 were classified as insecure
(4 avoidant, 3 resistant, and 2 disorganized).
The data analysis show that more maternal
expression of positive affective states is associ-
57
ated with security of infant attachment, whereas
more maternal and infant negative affective
states are associated with insecurity.
Furthermore, more dyadic expression of positive
coordinated affective states is related with
security of infant attachment and more dyadic
negative coordinated and dyadic miscoordinated
affective states with insecurity.
The quality of affective state coordination at 9
months proved to be a specific indicator for the
development of infant attachment, useful to
identify mother-child relationship risk conditions.
Summary
The work highlights how the mother-infant affective
coordination , at 9 months, can be an
indicator of the quality of the child attachment at
14 months.
