6 - PERCEPTIONS OF GRANDPARENTHOOD IN PARENTS OF CHILDREN
WITH AND WITHOUNT SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS
Maria Kypriotaki University of Crete (Crete - GR)
For instance, they provide emotional support
and economical assistance, they advise parents
regarding childrearing and participate with
grandchildren in playful, academic and schoolrelated
activities. However, less is known on
how parents of children with special educational
needs experience grandparenthood.
In Greece the members of intergenerational
families are closely knit and grandparents are
actively involved in their grandchildren’s lives.
However, their involvement has not been recognized
by policy makers and studied sufficiently.
The present study was designed
1) to examine parents’ perceptions of the extent
to which grandparents provide family support,
the degree of grandparents’ involvement in
the lives of grandchildren with and without special
educational needs, and
2) to explore the factors that may influence
their support and involvement (e.g. geographic
distance between their home and the grandparent’s
home, family status, educational level,
169
professional commitments, disability of the child
etc.).
The participants of this study are parents of
nursery and school aged typical developing
children and parents of children with disabilities
who attend special schools. Parents’ demographic
information, their perceptions regarding
the extent of grandparents’ involvement and the
kind of activities they share with their grandchild
regarding parents’ opinion will be accessed by
structured questionnaires.
A modified version of the Grandparent Support
Scale (Baranowsky & Schilmoeller, 1999) was
adjusted to explore the types of support provided
by grandparents in families with children with
and without special educational needs.
The findings will be discussed in relation of the
need to consider grandparents as part of the
family support system, who provide childcare,
emotional support and encouragement for parents
of children with and without special educational
needs.
