BODY’S IMAGE AND REPRESENTATION OF SELF’S LIMITS DISTURBANCES
BY SEVERELY OBESE TEENAGERS
Carine de Buck, Jennifer Foucart Centre Médical Pédiatrique Clairs Vallons, Ottignies (Ottignies - BE)
The clinic for severe obesity, grants an important
part nowadays to the psychological factors
in the development and uphold of that pathology.
Although there are many studies on the
psychological factors, those directed towards
the symptom “obesity” in the emotional dynamics
of the subject are very rare.
The authors who showed interested in that
topic, have made the hypothesis that obesity
could be considered as guarantor of the image
of the unified body facing the vague limits of the
self.
To check that hypothesis, we have done a
longitudinal research based on the question
of the representation of the limits of the self
amongst teenagers suffering of severe obesity,
before and after an important loss of weight.
Within the scope of that study, besides the clinical
examination , we have considered the test
of Rorschach, the questionnaire of the body‘s
249
image of Brouchon-Schweitzer and a drawing
of themselves in full dimension.
We have analyzed the received material from
24 teenagers aged 14 to 16 and suffering from
severe obesity at the start and at the end of the
study.
Data was compared with a population of
normal weight persons. The results enabled to
show specific disorders of the body’s image
and representations of self’s limits, amongst the
young patient suffering from severe obesity. We
will discuss those results in the light of the theories
of E. Bick, concerning the psychic envelope
and the phenomenon of second skin and those
of D. Anzieu.
We will consider the hypothesis that obesity is a
symptom which favours the uphold of the identity
of favoring a phenomenon of second skin coming
to the help of a failing psychic skin.
