An earthquake measuring 7 on the Richter scale
shook Haiti on January 12th 2010. The earthquake
caused many damages and an extremely important
number of victims (more than 220,00 deaths
and 1,200,00 of IPDs).
Million of Haitians have been affected by the
earthquake. The loss of close relatives in terrifying
conditions, family members trapped under the
rubble, serious injury and loss of all material possessions
were among the main causes for the
psychological distress people suffer from. In addition,
the consequent life conditions (deprivations,
loss, unemployment, family links weak or
broken, basic need not covered, insecure environment,
violence and rapes, uncertainty of future)
has a strong influence on the individual and family
capacity to develop adaptive behaviours. Even
after months people showed symptoms of PTSD
and depression.

Previous experiences of earthquakes have highlighted
the psychosocial needs of the population,
the necessity to strengthen the resilience and to
support the adequate coping mechanisms.
It will be presented how the NGO Action Contre
le Faim implemented psychosocial projects in
order to support pregnant and lactating women
and their families to cope with to the situation in
the best possible way to limit potential negative
side-effects (persons unable to carry out their
daily tasks, to breastfeed and to take care for infants
and young children).
The project aimed at identifying and providing
psychological and psychosocial support to the
vulnerable families most affected by the earthquake
(teen-ager mothers, pregnant women, infants,
young children, orphans, etc) through a
holistic approach in a different cultural context
with local resources.
