15 - PSYCHODYNAMIC DIAGNOSTIC MANUAL (PDM) IN ADOLESCENCE: ASSESSING<br />

PERSONALITY ORGANIZATION AND MENTAL FUNCTIONING WITH THE QFM BASED<br />

ASSESSMENT PROCEDURE<br />

Objective: The Psychodynamic Diagnostic<br />

Manual (PDM) has been published in 2006.<br />

Our research group of the University of Turin,<br />

coordinated by Cesare Albasi, has started working<br />

immediately on the creation and the developing<br />

of QFM based assessment procedure<br />

(http://diagnosi.pdm-qfm.com; http://utetniqfm.<br />

com).<br />

Methods: This assessment procedure system<br />

is based on a clinician report questionnaire that<br />

operationalizes the nine mental functions of M<br />

axis and the three levels of personality organization<br />

of P Axis (Healthy Personalities, Neurotic-Level<br />

Personality Disorders and Borderline-<br />

Level Personality Disorders). By crossing these<br />

two dimensions, as we can read in PDM (PDM<br />

Task Force, 2006, p. 23), we obtained 27 items<br />

that give the clinician the possibility of assessing<br />

each mental function at the same time as healthy,<br />

as carrier of conflicts (neurotic) and as function<br />

at disposal of the personality dissociation<br />

(borderline).<br />

Results: The QFM has been validated both on<br />

adult and adolescent samples. As far as adolescence<br />

is concerned, we collected normative<br />

data stratified by sex and age.<br />

The QFM system provides some elaborations<br />

which give the possibility to assess the nine mental<br />

functions and the levels of prevalent organization<br />

on adolescent patients: this system engages<br />

a better clinical attitude for the care of the<br />

patients and at the same time orients in a specific<br />

direction the therapeutic projects, that is towards<br />

the aims associated to diagnosis and assessment<br />

and achievable by a global and integrated<br />

clinical project; moreover, it enables the articulation<br />

and the integration of all the necessary types<br />

of treatments and interventions.<br />

Conclusions: At the session of the congress, we<br />

will propose and express the essential lines of<br />

our method and some of the principal results of<br />

the empirical researches currently in progress.
