15 - PSYCHODYNAMIC DIAGNOSTIC MANUAL (PDM) IN ADOLESCENCE: ASSESSING
PERSONALITY ORGANIZATION AND MENTAL FUNCTIONING WITH THE QFM BASED
ASSESSMENT PROCEDURE

Objective: The Psychodynamic Diagnostic
Manual (PDM) has been published in 2006.
Our research group of the University of Turin,
coordinated by Cesare Albasi, has started working
immediately on the creation and the developing
of QFM based assessment procedure
(http://diagnosi.pdm-qfm.com; http://utetniqfm.
com).
Methods: This assessment procedure system
is based on a clinician report questionnaire that
operationalizes the nine mental functions of M
axis and the three levels of personality organization
of P Axis (Healthy Personalities, Neurotic-Level
Personality Disorders and Borderline-
Level Personality Disorders). By crossing these
two dimensions, as we can read in PDM (PDM
Task Force, 2006, p. 23), we obtained 27 items
that give the clinician the possibility of assessing
each mental function at the same time as healthy,
as carrier of conflicts (neurotic) and as function
at disposal of the personality dissociation
(borderline).

Results: The QFM has been validated both on
adult and adolescent samples. As far as adolescence
is concerned, we collected normative
data stratified by sex and age.
The QFM system provides some elaborations
which give the possibility to assess the nine mental
functions and the levels of prevalent organization
on adolescent patients: this system engages
a better clinical attitude for the care of the
patients and at the same time orients in a specific
direction the therapeutic projects, that is towards
the aims associated to diagnosis and assessment
and achievable by a global and integrated
clinical project; moreover, it enables the articulation
and the integration of all the necessary types
of treatments and interventions.
Conclusions: At the session of the congress, we
will propose and express the essential lines of
our method and some of the principal results of
the empirical researches currently in progress.
