Abstract
PERINATAL RISK FACTORS AND MOTHER-INFANT RELATIONS
Candelori C., Babore A., Trumello C.
Faculty of Psychology - University of Chieti “G. d’Annunzio”
As we know, the concept of risk in perinatal
medicine is related to the multiple and articulated
conditions where the parental function
cannot be carried out in its essential aspects of
protection and care of offspring and strongly
affects the quality of infant-parent relations. With
its focus on the study of perinatal risks, our paper
is part of a larger longitudinal study aimed at
exploring the parental function starting from
pregnancy, for which we recruited a large group
of couples experiencing their first pregnancy.
With the help of various kinds of instruments
administered before and after birth, we analyzed
the following aspects: the parents’ mental representations;
the quality of their expectations, of
their care and of the first infant-parent interactions;
the types of infant attachment; the presence
of depressive symptoms in one or both
parents.
In the present paper we discuss one of the
main aims of our wider research, the presence
of risk factors, in order to provide timely psychological
support to couples.
With reference to the tools used (semi-structured
interviews, self-report questionnaires, direct
observation, clinical interviews) in our sample
54
we identified specific risk situations related in
particular to: problems in childbirth, presence of
significant psychological problems in one or
both parents, high level of conflict in the couple,
depressive symptoms before and/or after childbirth.
Our contribution is specifically focused on 50
mothers followed from pregnancy to 18 months
after childbirth. In particular, we present clinical
material from two cases, where existing problems
caused a distortion in mother-infant relations
and prompted us to plan the provision of
support and monitoring of the situation for a
longer period than that of the current study.
Summary
Perinatal risk factors for mother-child relationship
and later child development are explored
by means of a prospective longitudinal study
that has involved fifty parental couples since
their first experience of pregnancy. Two clinical
examples well be discussed.
