9 - THE PUPILS OF THE JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL IN LIPARI (MESSINA) ON THE APPROACH TO
AND CONSUMPTION OF ALCOHOLIC DRINKS

The EOLIE project (Educare Oggi: Lavorare
Insieme con Empatia), monitors models of
approach to and consumption of unnecessary
substances, the perception of risk and the specific
cultural background of pupils on this topic.
The aim is to assess whether it is necessary or
not- on the basis of the data gathered- to enact
interventions to adjust wrong knowledge and
behaviours and to promote a healthy life- style.
Materials and Methods: with this aim, in 2011
we asked 216 pupils of the junior high school in
Lipari, aged 10-16 (median age 12.2 years old),
to fill in an anonymous, self- administered, half
structures questionnaire on their knowledge of
and attitude toward alcoholic drinks.
Results: The alcoholization regards 66.7% of
pupils. In 1.9% of the sample alcoholization hap-

pened before the age of 6, in 31.5% it happened
between 6 and 10, and in 19.0% between 11
and 14.
Currently 57.9% of the pupils drink alcoholic
drinks with a daily intake amounting to 5.4% of
anhydrous alcohol per day. The 80.4% of alcohol
is drunk at meals, 44.6% of the pupils drink
spirits, 39.1% drink wine and 16.3% drink beer.
2.3% of the pupils say their alcoholic intake is
higher than the level considered dangerous for
an adult sound person and 8.8% say they got
drunk once or more during the last 12 months.
Conclusions: specific interventions aimed at
promoting a healthy life- style among pupils is
needed, especially in consideration of the results,
showing the pupils’ premature consumption of
alcohol and dangerous permissive behaviours
toward the alcoholic intake.
