Such an attitude is based on a sadomasochistic nucleus and characterised by the self-pitying of the mother, who is perceived by the baby as weak and fragile creature, to be protected and consoled because of the sorrow caused by people and events. Even if a mother is close to her child she is not perceived as a protective person, encouraging and capable of giving confidence, but as a victim, who often immolates for her child even when this would not be necessary: the need of protecting her and standing by her, the need of avoiding separation from her creates many problems in the child. He can either be so englobed that he can’t succeed in expressing his physio- 122 logical aggressiveness (which is present in every moment of his psycho-sexual development), that is necessary in order to step out of fusionality or, on the contrary, express the aggressiveness and pay the price in the shape of strong guilty feelings and with the possibility to turn it into violence against himself (or against substitutes of the mother). It is the case of a repressed aggressiveness, exacerbated by the impossibility of recognising oneself and of being recognised as a creature who is separated from the mother. With the help of clinical case we highlight the connections between the vulnerability of the mother figure to which a woman has been compared during her childhood and adolescence and the self-aggressive behaviours, which have characterised her youth. Furthermore we try to show the trans-generational character of the mother figure’s vulnerability, which she herself repeats without realising that.

Many studies have assessed the psychological distress of mothers of preterm babies during infant hospitalisation or the first years of life, focusing on the long term effects of prematurity, while there is a lack in literature concerning the first months after hospital discharge. 123 Objective: To describe parenting stress experienced by mothers and fathers of preterm infants at 3 months of corrected age, (c.a.), in relation to the perception of infant temparement, infant development and main perinatal medical variables. Method: The sample included 28 premature infants (gestational age).
