19 - FROM THE RESEARCH “ PRIMI PASSI” ON PRESCHOOL TREATMENTS FOR HILDREN
AGED 2-6 SUFFERING FROM AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDERS: RITICAL EVALUATIONS ON
RESULTS, APPLYING DIAGNOSTIC CODE ZERO TO THREE FOR TREATMENT ‘ PLANS
Rita Montoli, A. Gernone, F. Meroni Ambulatorio Primi Passi-Istituto San Vincenzo, (Milano - IT)
This work is part of the results of a research supported
by Umana-Mente Foundation (Fondazione
Gruppo Allianz ) e Istituto San Vincenzo- Milan
which aim was to carry out “suitable” treatment
for every child with ASD referred to the Clinic Primi
Passi during years 2007-2009.In fact individualisation
of treatment is very difficult for the variety
of symptoms, their change in time, the lack of semeiologic
standardization, and because of limits
of evaluation of treatments.
Using Zero-to-Three on the group of 49 cases referred
to the Clinic by local Child Neuropsychiatry
Unit, was possible to differentiate the clinical features
of each child. Thank to an in-depth study of
developmental delay in social communication and
interaction, sensory disabilities, patterns of primary
care, risk factors, quality of environment, treatments
have been carried out involving the child’s
parents in order to make the family “competent”
to help and cooperate in the treatment.
This study fully demonstrates that an early di-
367
agnosis of PDD/DGS (diagnostic categories considered
too wide and all-embracing by the whole
Scientific Community) cause parents’ great anguish
for the idea of hopelessness (destino senza
scampo) it conveys, restraining investment on
child communication and relation, worsening the
disease.
Because of the current organisation of Services,
characterized in Lombardi by the distinction between
the place of diagnosis (Hospitals and UON-
PIA) and the place of treatment (Social Cooperatives,
non profit Agencies or Institutions e.s.w) the
initial diagnosis could include more clinical features
for helping “workers of the field”.
