9 - AN EVIDENCE-PROGRAMME SYNTHESIS SEARCH ENGINE FOR CHILDREN WITH SPEECH,
LANGUAGE AND COMMUNICATION NEEDS
Biao Zeng, James Law School of Education Communication and Language Science, Newcastle University, (Newcastle -UK)
Objective: Parents and practitioners need a reliable
guide to understanding and choosing intervention
programmes. There is often a tension
between the services that children with developmental
disorders receive and the evidence
base underpinning specific interventions. In this
paper we demonstrate and test an approach
(PARIHS, 2010) maximizing understanding, uptake
and dissemination of evidence. Specifically
we use as our illustration the example of children
with speech language and communication
needs where there is a relatively strong emerging
evidence base but where practitioners often
rely heavily on custom and practice for the services
they deliver.
Methods: To source our evidence base we identified
28 systematic reviews which have addressed
the needs of children with SLCN evidence-based
effectiveness studies and over 70
SLCN intervention programmes used by UK
front-line practitioners. Using categories developed
following consultation by therapists and
researchers, we extract key information from effectiveness
studies and programmes.
354
We investigate
1) how wide range is these studies relevant to
programmes;
2) What proportion of programmes has been
examined with their effectiveness.
Results: While there are some descriptive studies
of current practice relatively few of the programmes
used by therapists are evidence based
for example using efficacy or effectiveness studies.
Nevertheless it is possible to read across
from the evidence base into practice making it
possible to combine practice and the literature
in a meaningful way using an interactive data
base to engage with the practitioner agenda and
inform practice change but most of all to inform
parents of what to look for to meet the needs of
their children identified with SLCN.
Conclusions: We demonstrate that it is possible
to develop an interactive database to reconcile
the sometimes conflicting sources of evidence
in this field. Future opportunities for this
type of approach will be discussed.
