Abstract
MOTHER- PRETERM INFANT INTERACTIONS IN THE FIRST SIX MONTHS OF LIFE
Introduction. Preterm birth has been recognised
as a source of considerable stress for parental
role (Olshtain-Mann & Auslander, 2008;
Spielman & Taubman, 2009). Due to its traumatic
impact, preterm birth can exacerbate
feelings of poor parental competence, affecting
the sensitivity towards the infant and the ability
to adjust the interaction to the infant level of immaturity
(Davis et al., 2007). Despite that, few
studies have explored interactions in the very
early stages of preterm babies’ life.
Aims. The aim of the study was to investigate
mother-preterm infant interactions at 3 and 6
months of corrected age (c.a.), analysing specific
patterns and course in relation to infant development
and parental stress about caregiving.
Sample. 33 mother-infant dyads were recruited
at the NICU of Cesena Bufalini Hospital (mean
gestational age 29 weeks, 51.5% VLBW, 55%
male). Inclusion criteria of the sample were:
