A PRAGMATIC FIELD RESEARCH ON PERI-NATAL DEPRESSION (PND)<br />

The ministerial research project aimed at designing<br />

and developing initiatives for the prevention of<br />

peri natal depression (PND) was assigned to the<br />

Psycologhical Service - Unit n.2 (Menthal Helth<br />

Department) Azienda Provinciale per I Servizi<br />

Sanitari of Trento. PND is recognized as one of<br />

the most common disorders in women during<br />

pregnancy and in the first year after the delivery<br />

(prevalence: 5% - 25%) and has significant consequences<br />

for the newborn, the mother - child<br />

relationship and for the whole family.<br />

Research objectives:<br />

Assess the feasibility of an intiative aimed at<br />

women during pregnancy and postpartum.<br />

Identify risk indicators using both new tools and/<br />

or those already validated in the literature.<br />

Evaluate the effectiveness of screening and a<br />

time-limited psychotherapeutic approach for<br />

women at risk.<br />

Method:<br />

326 pregnant women participated in the following<br />

steps of screening<br />

10 - 12 weeks of gestation<br />

28 - 30 weeks of gestation<br />

2, 6 and 8 months after birth<br />

Interview at the time of childbirth<br />

Staff:<br />

Two psychotherapist psychologists working as<br />

research fellows and 3 psychotherapist psychologists<br />

of Pycological Service<br />

Tools:<br />

1 Inventory of prognostic risk factors of peripartum<br />

depression (semi structured interwiew):<br />

2 EPDS<br />

3 PDSS<br />

4 CORE-OM<br />

Results:<br />

1 The women, who have been involved in the<br />

whole project have had a lower risk profile<br />

then the others. The perceived well-being also<br />

increased.<br />

2 The “Inventory Prognostic Tool” is sensitive to<br />

assess the risk condition;<br />

3 A positive correlation between obstetric and<br />

gynecological problems and psychological<br />

difficulties during the pregnancy, childbirth<br />

and childcare in the months after birth is<br />

shwowed.<br />

4 The time - limited psychotherapy prove effective<br />

in our small sample.
