SEX AND DIFFERENCES ON ADOLESCENT BIPOLAR DISORDER. CASE STUDY ON GENDER
DIVERSITY IN CLINICAL PROFILES OF ADOLESCENTS WITH BIPOLAR DISORDER.

Background: The point of departure for this
study is the gender diversity we observed in
clinical profiles of adolescents with Bipolar Disorder.
Knowledge concerning differences between
girls and boys with BP is limited.
Methods: On the basis of our clinical observations
of youths with BP we reviewed the current
literature on gender differences of adolescents
with the disorder. In addition, we present two
cases, one girl and one boy diagnosed with Bipolar
Disorder who were followed up for four
years. We collected detailed information on developmental,
family and social history of the
children. We evaluated the clinical characteristics
and the course of the disorder from childhood
until adolescence. We recorded the differences
on all these dimensions between the two
children.

Results: During the last five years there is a
significant number of articles on gender perspective
in adult Bipolar illness. Studies about
adolescence BP are mainly referring on epidemiological
reports. However, there is a number
of reports on different clinical characteristics
between the two sexes in children and adolescents
such as emotional reactivity, suicidality,
hypomanic- like stages, etc. Similarities and differences
between two genders were analyzed.
Conclusion: The results emphasize that the
study of the BP disorder on the epidemiological
and clinical differences between the two sexes
in children and adolescents is useful for intervention
and the therapeutic process.
