An adoptive family calls for a psychologist, because of
school problems of their second adopted child, Mirko,
13 years old, adopted at the age of 6 years with his
birth sister, 9 years old at the moment of the adoption.
On the phone, the mother says that Mirko was expelled
from school for 3 days, because he had punched a fellow
of his. In the first family interview, Mirko explains that
this boy had insulted his family and that it is
intolerable for him. He adds he is very angry with his
teachers, because they punished himself instead of his
school friend who has been the only guilty.
Telling about the adoption, Mirko says that if a child is
adopted very early, he grows up with the belief that
the adoptive parents are his real parents, but when a
child is adopted older, like it has happened to himself
and his sister, the adopted children have to put
themselves in the shoes of their parents and try to help
them.
This is the reason for which he can tolerate that someone
insults himself, but not his family!
It becomes clear to the psychotherapist the hypothesis
that the basis of Mirko’s anger is the representation of
his indefensible birth family.
