On the axis of the Adoptive Family
Towards the extremes of the axis we can find
different dysfunctional positions:
Idealization(splitting process: all good to the Adoptive
Family)
Relational Difficulties (when the relationships within the
Adoptive Families are seriously compromised for a long
time )
Relational Fracture (in case of failure of the Adoption)
In the middle part of the axis we find more functional
positions
Valorization(gratitude, positive relationship…)
Assimilation(living as if the adoptive Family is one’s
biological one)
Normalization(need to specify that all is normal, no
difference recognized between adoptive and biological
families)
The Double Moon Test (Greco,1999,2006)
is specifically meant to identify two main
indicators in structurally complex family
situations, like adoptive families.
It was designed in such a way that,
on the one hand, allows the persons to
project a graphic tracing of their own
representation of the family boundaries
and inclusions;
and, on the other hand, can evoke the
theme of the absent or distant family
member (s), in order to investigate how
the individuals come to terms with the
dimension of loss.

3) “Now enclose within one circle

It is a problem, for a clinician or a
psychotherapist, to deepen the balance
between the dual connection and the dual
belonging.
The Double Moon Test (Greco, 1999; 2006) is a
graphic- projective test that may be of
some use for this task.

the most” – in opposition to what lies outside
and represents everything else – “draw a
symbol representing yourself and locate your
symbol wherever you wish”.
2) “Now, still using a symbol, draw the people
who are important to you and place them
wherever you wish, no matter how close to
you or distant from you these important
people might be in this moment”. This
premise is aimed at authorising the
individuals – if they wish and are able to– to
name and place those Fig. who 2 are absent – yet -
present in the drawing.

5) “If you had a magic wand, would you change anything
in your drawing? (Is there anyone you would like to add?
Is there anyone you would like to move in another
position? Who? Where would you like to locate
him/her?)”
