12 - THE PUPILS OF THE JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL IN LIPARI (MESSINA) ON THE MENTAL
ILLNESS (MM) AND THE MENTALLY ILL (ME)
Giovanni Battista Modonutti (1) , F. Costantinides (1) , R. Candia (2) (1) Research Group on Health Education- University of
Trieste, (Trieste - IT); (2) Italian Comprehensive School II “S. Lucia” of Lipari (Messina - IT)
This study collected the opinions of preteens on
the Mental Illness (MM) and the Mentally Ill (ME)
in order to use them to promote mental health
and to avoid stigmatizing attitudes toward MM
and ME. Within the EOLIE project (Educare Oggi:
Lavorare Insieme con Empatia), 216school in Lipari
filled in an anonymous, self- administered
and half- structured questionnaire to gather information
on this specific topic.
Results: The pupils believe that: MM is different
from other illnesses (M: 71.7%; F: 82.7%); people
suffering from MM are better treated when
hospitalized (M: 50.0%; F: 60.0%); modern treatments
of MM are effective (M: 57.5%; F: 72.7%);
who suffers from a MM can actually recover from
it (M: 56.6%; F: 78.2%).
360
Similarly, the majority of pupils believe that they
can always identify someone who suffered from
a MM (M: 54.7%; F: 52.7%) and that MEs are
dangerous (M: 56.6%; F: 57.3%).
Both 55.6% and 56.5% of the pupils believe that
they can always identify someone who suffered
from a MM can work (M: 48.4%; F: 62.7%) and
have kids (M49.1%; f: 63.6%).
Conclusions: The pupils’ opinions are to be
linked to the folk culture rather than to virtual scientific
knowledge. The opinions are evidence of
widespread stigmatizing attitudes toward MM
and ME and make it necessary to plan and enact
a targeted intervention aiming at mental health
promotion.
