Sweethearts (Sullivan) [1875]; <strong>The</strong> love that loves me not (Sullivan)<br />

[1875]. He also illustrated books and stories, chiefly those written by his<br />

father, William Gilbert, including <strong>The</strong> magic mirror, ‘1866’ [1865], and<br />

King George’s middy, 1868–9.<br />

Contributions to periodicals<br />

In addition to the periodicals referred to under §1, above, Gilbert contributed<br />

to Belgravia, Broadway Annual, Comic News, Cornhill, <strong>The</strong> Dark<br />

Blue, Fun, London Soc, Graphic, Illus Sporting and Dramatic News,<br />

Mirth, Once a Week, Punch, etc. His chief connection was with Fun,<br />

beginning in 1861, for which he wrote prose and verse <strong>of</strong> all kinds and contributed<br />

many illustrations. He reviewed plays for Fun, Illus Times, Daily<br />

News, and the Observer.<br />
