Editions, introductions and translations<br />

From 1887 to 1889 Ellis was editor <strong>of</strong> the Mermaid Series <strong>of</strong> Old<br />

Dramatists, and edited plays by Marlowe, Middleton, Porter and Ford, to<br />

which he also wrote introductions. From 1889 to 1914 he was editor <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Contemporary Science Ser. In addition, Ellis wrote a great many introductions<br />

to literary works as well as to works in the field <strong>of</strong> psychology, sociology<br />

etc; he edited writings <strong>of</strong> (among others) Chapman, Heine, Ibsen and<br />

Landor, and translated work by Lombroso, Renan, Zola et al.<br />

Hundreds <strong>of</strong> reviews <strong>of</strong> Ellis’s works were written in his lifetime, and at his<br />

death obituaries and appreciations were pbd in a great many European and<br />

Amer jnls. Listed below are a number <strong>of</strong> full-length secondary works which have<br />

been important in the establishment <strong>of</strong> Ellis’s reputation or which emphasise<br />
