Major works
For authors spanning 1900, publications after 1900 have been included to offer
a sense of the position of their writing. The distinctive feature of these books is
the way they define an enormous mass market, with some authors selling literally
millions of books. The first date in each entry indicates the first known
edn; for books with very large print runs or many edns or impressions the date
of the last known printing is given; together with an indication of the number
of edns or highest known numbered edition; the sign + indicates ‘more than’.
