<strong>The</strong> joy-ride (1923), <strong>The</strong> samurai (1923). Archer also pbd many lectures and<br />

pams, mostly <strong>of</strong> a polemical nature.<br />

Contributions to periodicals and collaborative works<br />

Archer wrote for a great number <strong>of</strong> periodicals on a wide variety <strong>of</strong> subjects; see<br />

Wellesley 5 1989 for his contributions to Br Quart Rev, Contemporary Rev,<br />

Fortnightly Rev, Longman’s Mag, Macmillan’s Mag, Nat Rev, New Rev<br />

and Westminster Rev. He also contributed articles to such collaborative works<br />

as B. Matthews and L. Hutton (ed), Actors and actresses <strong>of</strong> Great Britain<br />

and Ireland (New York 1886) and Shakespeare’s England (Oxford 1916).<br />

Editions, introductions and translations<br />

Archer made a notable contribution to Ibsen’s reception in England by translating<br />

into prose all Ibsen’s more important plays, occasionally in collaboration<br />

with Charles Archer or Edmund Gosse, 1888–1913; he also translated plays by<br />

Hauptmann, Maeterlinck and Brandes, and essays etc by Brandes and other<br />

Scandinavian writers. He edited and introduced a number <strong>of</strong> miscellaneous<br />

works, among which are plays by Congreve, Farquhar, Gilbert and Shakespeare.<br />
