Editions, introductions and translations
Saintsbury pbd edns of and introductions to the works of numerous English
and several French authors, the chief of which are Balzac, Dryden, Fielding,
Flaubert, Montaigne, Peacock, Smollett, Thackeray and Voltaire. He also
edited collective works such as The pocket library of English literature,6
vols 1891–2, Periods of European literature, 12 vols Edinburgh 1899–1923
and Minor poets of the Caroline period, 3 vols Oxford 1905–21. He translated
works by Balzac, Marmontel, Mérimée, Scherer and Madame de Stael.
Contributions to periodicals and collaborative works
Saintsbury was subeditor of the Saturday Rev from 1880 to 1894. He wrote
thousands of articles, reviews and obituaries for more than 50 periodicals and
newspapers in Britain and the United States (see also Wellesley 5 1989). He
also contributed widely to composite works like CHEL, Craik’s English
prose, Encyclopaedia Britannica, Essays and studies by members of
the English Assoc, PBA and Ward’s English poets.
