Saintsbury pbd edns <strong>of</strong> and introductions to the works <strong>of</strong> numerous <strong>English</strong><br />

and several French authors, the chief <strong>of</strong> which are Balzac, Dryden, Fielding,<br />

Flaubert, Montaigne, Peacock, Smollett, Thackeray and Voltaire. He also<br />

edited collective works such as <strong>The</strong> pocket library <strong>of</strong> <strong>English</strong> literature,6<br />

vols 1891–2, Periods <strong>of</strong> European literature, 12 vols Edinburgh 1899–1923<br />

and Minor poets <strong>of</strong> the Caroline period, 3 vols Oxford 1905–21. He translated<br />

works by Balzac, Marmontel, Mérimée, Scherer and Madame de Stael.<br />

Contributions to periodicals and collaborative works<br />

Saintsbury was subeditor <strong>of</strong> the Saturday Rev from 1880 to 1894. He wrote<br />

thousands <strong>of</strong> articles, reviews and obituaries for more than 50 periodicals and<br />

newspapers in Britain and the United States (see also Wellesley 5 1989). He<br />

also contributed widely to composite works like CHEL, Craik’s <strong>English</strong><br />

prose, Encyclopaedia Britannica, Essays and studies by members <strong>of</strong><br />

the <strong>English</strong> Assoc, PBA and Ward’s <strong>English</strong> poets.<br />
