Three more volumes <strong>of</strong> Dodgson’s letters are projected: to his illustrators; to<br />

Henry Savile Clarke, who produced the first Alice on the pr<strong>of</strong>essional stage;<br />

and his public letters. Dodgson both produced with his electric pen and had<br />

printed numerous circulars, letters he sent to multiple recipients; most are<br />

recorded in the Crutch Handbook 1979 and will be included in the projected<br />

volumes <strong>of</strong> public letters.<br />

Introductions and prefaces<br />

Dodgson wrote numerous introductions, prologues and prefaces to his own<br />

works, frequently adding or altering them in later edns. <strong>The</strong> most famous is<br />

the advertisement in the 2nd edn <strong>of</strong> Symbolic logic, part I, where he contradicts<br />

the ‘silly story’ about his having presented certain books to Queen<br />

Victoria. He wrote only a few prefatory pieces for works other than his own.<br />
