<strong>The</strong> manuscript booklet <strong>of</strong> Alice’s adventures under ground (the precursor<br />

<strong>of</strong> Alice’s adventures in Wonderland) is in the BL. No complete manuscripts<br />

<strong>of</strong> Alice’s adventures in Wonderland, Through the<br />

looking-glass or <strong>The</strong> hunting <strong>of</strong> the Snark have come to light. Four<br />

family manuscript magazines, almost entirely by Dodgson, survive: Useful<br />

and instructive poetry at the Fales Lib, New York Univ; <strong>The</strong> rectory<br />

umbrella and Mischmasch at the Houghton Lib Harvard; and <strong>The</strong><br />

rectory magazine at HRHRC. Nine volumes <strong>of</strong> the surviving diaries are at<br />

the BL, one at Princeton. Important collections <strong>of</strong> manuscripts and first edns<br />

are, in addition to the locations mentioned above, at the Berg Collection<br />

NYPL, Bodleian, Univ <strong>of</strong> Br Columbia Lib Vancouver, Bryn Mawr College Lib<br />

Bryn Mawr PA; Christ Church Lib Oxford, Columbia Univ Lib, Huntington,<br />

Pierpont Morgan Lib, Muniments Room Castle Arch Museum Guildford,<br />

Surrey, Osborne Collection Toronto, and Rosenbach. Some <strong>of</strong> the most valuable<br />

material still resides in private collections. Collections <strong>of</strong> Carroll’s original<br />
