Gillies also contributed to S. E. Brydges’s <strong>The</strong> ruminator: containg a<br />

series <strong>of</strong> moral, critical and sentimental essays, 1813, and was the<br />

reputed author <strong>of</strong> Extempore to Walter Scott, Esq, on the publication<br />

<strong>of</strong> the new edition <strong>of</strong> the bridal <strong>of</strong> Triermain [1819]. He also edited the<br />

Foreign Quart Rev, from its foundation in 1827, and was a frequent contributor<br />

to Blackwood’s Mag, Fraser’s Mag, and other periodicals between<br />

1824 and 1840.<br />
