Sketches by ‘Boz’ illustrative <strong>of</strong> every-day life and every-day<br />

people. Illustr George Cruikshank 2 vols 1836; second ser 1836.<br />

<strong>The</strong> ptd title page <strong>of</strong> ser 2 is dated 1837, the engraved 1836. It was<br />

actually pbd on 17 Dec 1836 (the preface being dated the same<br />

day). <strong>The</strong>re are variants in both ser. <strong>The</strong> Sketches appeared originally<br />

at intervals in Monthly Mag, Bell’s Weekly Mag, Morning<br />

Chron, Evening Chron, Bell’s Life in London (signed ‘Tibbs’),<br />

Lib <strong>of</strong> Fiction and Carlton Chron. For detailed list, see Appendix<br />

F, Letters <strong>of</strong> Dickens, ed M. House and G. Storey, vol 1, Oxford<br />

1965. <strong>The</strong> earliest – Dickens’s first appearance in print as an<br />

author – was A dinner at Poplar Walk (called Mr Minns and his<br />

cousin in ser 2) in Monthly Mag Dec 1833. Many items were substantially<br />

rev before republication: see J. Butt and K. Tillotson,<br />

Dickens at work, 1957, ch 2. After the first edn Dickens persuaded<br />

Chapman & Hall to purchase the copyright <strong>of</strong> both ser<br />
