<strong>The</strong> mystery <strong>of</strong> Edwin Drood. With twelve illustrations by S. L.<br />

Fildes, and a portrait. In 6 monthly pts, Apr–Sep 1870 (Dickens’s<br />

death in June 1870 having cut short the announced 12 pts). <strong>The</strong><br />

ms, complete except for 5 paragraphs from ch 1, a list <strong>of</strong> projected<br />

titles, the ‘Sapsea fragment’, number plans, and the corrected<br />

pro<strong>of</strong> for no 5 only are in the Forster Collection. A complete<br />

pro<strong>of</strong>, originally sent to Sir Luke Fildes, is in the Beinecke Lib <strong>of</strong><br />

Yale Univ. Forster prints a cancelled ch, How Mr Sapsea ceased to<br />

be a member <strong>of</strong> the Eight Club (Life, bk 11 ch 2). <strong>The</strong> ch order in<br />

the pts seen through the press by Forster has been criticised by<br />

some commentators, as departing from Dickens’s intentions.<br />
