De Quincey sometimes altered the titles <strong>of</strong> his essays when he reprinted them,<br />

as did D. Masson, editor <strong>of</strong> what has been the standard collected edn. Here the<br />

first published titles <strong>of</strong> works by De Quincey are used, but any significant<br />

changes to titles in later eds are noted.<br />
