Contributions to periodicals<br />

Jefferies wrote nearly 300 pieces – essays, articles, stories and serialised works<br />

– for 35 periodicals. He revised and selected many <strong>of</strong> these for book publication<br />

and many more have been collected by a series <strong>of</strong> editors since his death (see §1,<br />

above). <strong>The</strong>re are also a considerable number <strong>of</strong> unsigned periodical pieces for<br />

which claims <strong>of</strong> Jefferies’ authorship have been made, with or without adequate<br />

documentary support. Some <strong>of</strong> these, including a group <strong>of</strong> 59 on farming<br />

topics in Live Stock Jnl 1877–87, have not been reprinted. For a detailed guide<br />

to all known contributions, their book publication, textual variation, and<br />

problems <strong>of</strong> attribution, see Miller and Matthews, Bibliographies, above,<br />

and Keith, §2 below. <strong>The</strong> following list is <strong>of</strong> works signed or otherwise claimed<br />
