Contributions to periodicals
Jefferies wrote nearly 300 pieces – essays, articles, stories and serialised works
– for 35 periodicals. He revised and selected many of these for book publication
and many more have been collected by a series of editors since his death (see §1,
above). There are also a considerable number of unsigned periodical pieces for
which claims of Jefferies’ authorship have been made, with or without adequate
documentary support. Some of these, including a group of 59 on farming
topics in Live Stock Jnl 1877–87, have not been reprinted. For a detailed guide
to all known contributions, their book publication, textual variation, and
problems of attribution, see Miller and Matthews, Bibliographies, above,
and Keith, §2 below. The following list is of works signed or otherwise claimed
