Major mss holdings: Princeton and the Boston College Lib both contain collections<br />

<strong>of</strong> Patmore’s letters: in addition, Princeton has holograph notes in<br />

Patmore’s hand and working drafts <strong>of</strong> several <strong>of</strong> his articles; Boston College<br />

has the partial ms <strong>of</strong> his ‘Autobiography’ and a notebook <strong>of</strong> ‘Poetry together<br />

with original notes on scientific subjects by Patmore’, together with photocopies<br />

<strong>of</strong> his extant literary mss. <strong>The</strong> original ms <strong>of</strong> <strong>The</strong> unknown Eros is in<br />

the BL; the ms <strong>The</strong> rod, the root, and the flower in the Nottingham Univ<br />

Lib; the only extant ms <strong>of</strong> <strong>The</strong> angel in the house, together with Shane<br />

Leslie’s variorum edn, which he presented to Alice Meynell in 1893, is in the<br />

<strong>of</strong> which the following sample is characteristic:<br />
