<strong>The</strong> major surviving mss are located in the Abinger Collection held on deposit<br />

at the Bodleian. <strong>The</strong>se include the mss <strong>of</strong> Mary Shelley’s journals,<br />

Frankenstein, Mathilda, <strong>The</strong> fields <strong>of</strong> fancy, a memoir <strong>of</strong> William<br />

Godwin (unfinished), a short story entitled Cecil (unfinished), and miscellaneous<br />

drafts, letters and papers. Other mss are located in the Bodleian Shelley<br />

Papers. <strong>The</strong>se include Proserpine, Midas, Relation <strong>of</strong> the death <strong>of</strong> the<br />

family <strong>of</strong> the Cenci (trn), research notes for Valperga, a memoir <strong>of</strong> P. B.<br />

Shelley (unfinished), and several notebooks containing Mary Shelley’s transcriptions<br />

<strong>of</strong> Shelley’s poetry and prose. Most <strong>of</strong> these items are available in<br />

annotated photo facs in Mss <strong>of</strong> the younger romantics: Shelley, gen ed<br />

D. H. Reiman, 9 vols New York and London 1985– , or in Bodleian<br />

Shelley mss, gen ed D. H. Reiman, 23 vols New York and London<br />

Benfield, New York and London 1986– . Mary Shelley’s prose trn <strong>of</strong><br />

Apuleius’ story <strong>of</strong> Cupid and Psyche is located in the Mary Shelley notebook<br />

in the Lib <strong>of</strong> Congress; and her short story for children, Maurice, or the<br />

fisher’s cot, is in the private archive <strong>of</strong> the Dazzi family in San Marcello,<br />

Italy. One <strong>of</strong> her mss works has never been found: Hate, a story begun in 1814.<br />
