Major collections <strong>of</strong> Butler mss are in the BL, Williams College MA, and St<br />

John’s College <strong>Cambridge</strong>. See IELM vol 4 pt 1 1982. <strong>The</strong>re is also a considerable<br />

number <strong>of</strong> letters in Italian by Butler; some were exhibited at the Samuel<br />

Butler Exhibition held at the Biblioteca Civica ‘Farinone-Centa’, Varallo-<br />

Sesia, as part <strong>of</strong> the five hundredth anniversary <strong>of</strong> the Sacro Monte, Varallo, in<br />

1986. <strong>The</strong>se are for the most part in the possession <strong>of</strong> the descendants <strong>of</strong><br />

Butler’s Italian correspondents.<br />
