The extent of Beeton’s personal involvement in the range of works attributed
to him and which he published is impossible to disentangle. In most cases he
was editor, or editor and compiler, rather than sole author. In 1866 Ward, Lock
and Tyler (later Ward and Lock) took over his publishing house with the right
to all existing and future Beeton titles. Disagreements over their use of his
name were only resolved after a lawsuit. Beeton then left Ward and Lock
(1875) but they continued to use his name for works he originated. See also Mrs
(Isabella Mary) Beeton, above.
