Walter Savage Landor 1775–1864<br />

Landor mss are held by a number <strong>of</strong> Br and Amer libs. <strong>The</strong> only major poetic<br />

ms to survive – that <strong>of</strong> ‘Count Julian’ – is in the Forster Col at the Lib <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Victoria and Albert Museum, together with letters from Landor to Forster<br />

(mostly pbd in Forster’s Walter Savage Landor. A biography). <strong>The</strong> BL has<br />

various mss for prose and verse compositions, including the sonnet ‘To Robert<br />

Browning’, and letters to a variety <strong>of</strong> correspondents, including Charles Lamb,<br />

Swinburne and the Countess <strong>of</strong> Blessington. <strong>The</strong> Bodleian, Edinburgh Univ<br />

Lib and John Rylands Univ Lib, Manchester, also have significant ms cols <strong>of</strong><br />

correspondence. <strong>The</strong> Huntington holds many items, including literary mss,<br />

correspondence and private papers. <strong>The</strong> Baylor Univ Browning Col has many<br />

letters from Landor to Browning (unreliable texts <strong>of</strong> these letters are published<br />

in Minchin’s Landor: last days, letters and conversations).<br />

Arkansas Univ Lib has correspondence with Elizabeth Barrett Browning; the<br />

Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Lib at Yale holds a col <strong>of</strong> mostly unpbd<br />

letters to Kenneth Robert Henderson Mackenzie; the Chicago Univ Lib holds<br />

letters, including some to John Forster on literary topics; the HRHRC at the<br />

Univ <strong>of</strong> Texas at Austin has correspondence with Dickens. Other items are in<br />

the Berg Col, New York Public Lib; the Houghton Lib, Harvard; Iowa Univ Lib,<br />

Knox College Archives; the Carl H. Pforzheimer Lib, New York; the Pierpont<br />

Morgan Lib, New York; the Univ <strong>of</strong> Virginia Lib; and the Swann archive, Univ<br />
