Herbert Spencer 1820–1903
The BL has most of Spencer’s book mss. Senate House Lib, Univ of London,
holds on permanent loan the substantial Athenaeum collection of Herbert
Spencer’s papers. For details of these, along with several less important collections,

With the 1867 pbn of the 2nd edn of First principles and the 2nd vol of his
Principles of biology, Spencer directed that his publishers (Williams and
Norgate of London, and D. Appleton of New York) should no longer provide
review copies of his books. (He was aggrieved by the frequent misconstruction
and generally careless treatment of his ideas in the pages of the periodical
reviews.) Spencer held to this policy for nearly 10 years. Had he not interdicted
the normal review process, much more would have been written about the 2nd
vol of the 1st edn of The principles of biology, the 2nd and 3rd edns of First
principles, the 2nd edn of The principles of psychology, and the 3rd ser
of Essays.
