Bibliographic sources
The nineteenth century is less well served than its predecessor by the available
bibliographies dealing with primary printed sources. The only work that
covers the entire century has the minor regional limitation indicated in its
subtitle: A catalogue of pamphlets on economic subjects, published
between 1750 and 1900, and now housed in Irish libraries by R. D.
Collison Black, Belfast 1969. The second vol of The catalogue of the
Goldsmiths’ Library of Economic Literature (comp M. Canney, D.
Knott and J. M Gibbs with an introd by J. H. P. Pafford, 2 vols Cambridge, vol 1
1970, vol 2 1975) covers the period from 1801–50, using a chronological
arrangement supplemented by subject divisions within each year. The second
and third vols of The catalogue of the Kress Library of Business and
Economics (5 vols plus supplementary vols, Harvard 1940, 1956, 1957, 1964,
1967) only cover the period up to 1848, though a consolidated bibliography for
the Goldsmith and Kress Collections, now available in microform, is
promised.
The following useful sources are more partial in their coverage for the reasons
indicated in their titles, dates of publication, and supplementary comments.
McCulloch, J. R. The literature of political economy. 1845, rptd New
The pioneering work in identifying the authors of anonymous articles in some
leading periodicals was done by Frank W. Fetter: see The authorship of
economic articles in the Edinburgh Rev 1802–47, Jnl of Political
Economy 61 1953; The economic articles in the Quarterly Review and
their authors 1809–52, Jnl of Political Economy 66 1958; Economic
economic articles in the Westminster Review and their authors,
1824–51, Jnl of Political Economy 70 1962. These articles still contain valuable
material on authorship, despite the fact that in terms of coverage they
have been superseded by Wellesley.
Sir William James Ashley 1860–1927
