Government Returns of the Stamp Duties
The original returns of the Stamp Duty on Newspapers from about 1749 to
1855 were scheduled for destruction under the Public Record Office Act of 1877.
Besides the official returns listed below from House of Commons Accounts &
Papers, they were frequently cited in works on the press, e.g. Charles Knight’s
Companion to the Newspaper.
