Collections and selections
The first English one-vol edns of 8 of the novels listed below were issued or reissued
by Sampson, Low at various dates between 1881 and 1894; they were
issued from 1887 onwards in matching bindings and might thus be held to
constitute a first col of much of Hardy’s fiction. The history of the development
Fiction
For priv ptd or uncollected contributions to books, periodicals and newspapers,
see R. L. Purdy, A Bibliographical study, above. The first English edns of
novels that appeared in serial form were universally revised by Hardy; the
same is true of all vols in the Wessex novels edn of 1895–6 and the Wessex edn
of 1912–31; the notation ‘(rev)’ has not been appended to entries for these vols.
It is also the case that prefaces were added or altered in all fiction vols in both
Wessex novels and Wessex edns. The textual relationship between American
and English serialisations and early editions is in many cases complex, and
cannot fully be indicated in this abbreviated listing; for further details see the
WCp editions of individual works where available, and S. Gatrell, Hardy
the creator, below. Hardy’s novels have been very widely issued in hbk and
pbk in Britain and the United States, particularly since 1978; the texts have
almost universally followed those of the Wessex edn, above. Only versions
that have been critically edited are listed here. Hardy’s novels have been translated
into almost every known language, but it has proved impossible to
provide accurate inclusive information concerning such translations.
