be submitted. I was unable to attend the last council, so know nothing further ...“

hatte. Statt des Geldes kam dieser „gute Rat“:
„Why not stay there and marry a Frenchman?“

An den ihm befreundeten Kunstkritiker Frank Rutter, der ihn wohl gebeten hatte, einer irischen Schrifstellerin
(„Cranwill“) behilflich zu sein.
„... You know what artists are: they start wailing like lost spirits the moment any official person asks them to wipe their
feet on the mat. And I know what Irish Guilds are, with their forged charters signed ... Carolus Rex or God knows who,
and their ‘legal’ privileges which they cannot enforce.
I do not doubt Miss Cranwill’s assurance that she has gone into it thoroughly; but that does not get me any further. I
must know the charter and the grievance and the remedy before I can interfere with any effect. And I don’t know Miss
Cranwill’s work.
Trade restrictions, though very irritating to our anarchic artists, are sometimes necessary to protect the livelihood of the
less independent workers ... The day for writing Trade with a small t and Art with a large A has gone by ...“
