Von den Sorgen und Nöten des Exilanten geprägter Brief an seine Freundin Liesl Monath geb. Burger, die
Tochter von Friederike Zweigs Bruder, die in die U.S.A. emigriert war.
„Dear Liesl, I am so glad to know that your parents arrived safely and I hope they will like America; we had here in England
a better time, than we expected. Till now the war is more an economical one and the consequences will appear but
in later times for the whole of Europe and perhaps in a complete social transformation of the whole world. In any case: we
expected bombardements, we have been
prepared for the worst and there is now a
certain feeling of relief. I am very glad to
have gone away from London to the country
and – as I hope you will see it soon – it
is a delicious quiet place and I can start to
work again after six month of nervousness.
We have all a heavy stain on our nerves to
overcome and I understand how difficult
the business of Paul must be nowadays; but
if it were only our own worries! We have
everyone so many people to help and the
misery in Central Europe, especially for the
refugees becomes more and more terrible
from day to day…
From Gertrud I have no news … I am not
very happy with her going to America just
now - if she could wait only till to the
spring. Every crossing contains a good deal
of risk during the foggy winter month."
Mit "Gertrud" könnte die Journalistin
Gertrud Adelt gemeint sein, die mit
ihrem Mann Leonhard zu Zweigs Freunden
zählten.
"When shall we meet again? I would like to
come again for a few weeks immediately
after the war, but who can tell when this
will be? I am glad for you, that you have
your family in safety - from Frizi" -
Zweigs erste Frau Friederike - "I have
good news, her son in law is finally out of
the camp. I would like to visit her in Paris,
but all is too complicated now und so I stay
like an eremit in my home - I have not yet a
dog, because I am afraid, that I could give
him not all the good care like in former
times…"
