Reanimad vuestra confianza todas ¡as mañanas y muciias veces en el dia; y cuando la pru<strong>de</strong>ncia cristiana exigiere que os sirváis <strong>de</strong>l crédilo y <strong>de</strong> la benevolencia <strong>de</strong> vuestros protectores, <strong>de</strong>cid á Dios, que sin embargo <strong>de</strong> lo que baccis, solo en él ponéis toda vuestra confianza. Tenedla muy singular en ta protección <strong>de</strong> la Santísima Virgen, confiar en ella es coníiar en Dios. La confianzalfo nuestro ángel <strong>de</strong> la guarda y en los santos es también muy útii. Son protectores seguros y amigos con quienes po<strong>de</strong>mos contar seguramente. SÁBADO PRIMERO DE CUARESMA, LLAMADO COMUNMENTE DE LAS CUATRO TÉMPORAS. Todo es misterioso en los oficios do Cuaresma, lodo es instruclivo en ellos, y todo concurre á inspirarnos el espíriln <strong>de</strong> penitencia. La misa <strong>de</strong> este dia comienza por aquellas hermosas palabras <strong>de</strong>l salmo 87 : Señor, llegue mi corazón basta vos, aplicad vuestro oido á los votos que yo os dirijo. Señor, mi Dios, mi libertador, yo no ceso dia y noche do importunaros con mis clamores para que me ayudéis. David, perseguido por Absalon y representando á Dios sus males en la oración, es una figura sensible <strong>de</strong> Jesucristo que ruega á su Padre en él tiempo <strong>de</strong> su pasión. Todo este salmo es una imagen profélica, y al mismo tiempo una viva espresion <strong>de</strong> los soniimienlos <strong>de</strong>l corazón <strong>de</strong> Jesucristo, tan ignominiosamente tratado, tan cruelmente perseguido por un pueblo <strong>de</strong> quien era el rey y el padre. En la misa <strong>de</strong> este dia se leen seis lecciones según se acostumbra hacer en lodos los sábados <strong>de</strong> las cuatro témporas. Ksío uso es muy antiguo en la Iglesia. Queda dicho ya en el sábado <strong>de</strong> las cuatro témporas <strong>de</strong> diciembre, por que se habia dado al sábado <strong>de</strong> las cuatro témporas ol nombre <strong>de</strong> «dia <strong>de</strong> las doce lecciones.» Aunque el ayuno <strong>de</strong> las cualro témporas en las cuatro estaciones <strong>de</strong>l año sea <strong>de</strong> institución apostólica, sin embargo, hasta el undécimo siglo, en tiempo <strong>de</strong>l papa san Gregorio VU, no se fijaron las cualro témporas <strong>de</strong> primavera á la primera semana do Cuaresma, y las <strong>de</strong> estío á Pentecostés; lo cual fué confirmado por un nuevo <strong>de</strong>creto <strong>de</strong> diez años <strong>de</strong>spués, en el concilio do Clermonl en Auvorgne, dado por el papa Urbano U que presidió en él. La primera <strong>de</strong> las seis lecciones <strong>de</strong>stinadas á la misa do este dia es lomada <strong>de</strong>l libro <strong>de</strong>l Deuleronomio, en don<strong>de</strong> Dios or<strong>de</strong>na á su pueblo el pago <strong>de</strong> un diezmo particular, pero trienal, es <strong>de</strong>cir, solo <strong>de</strong> tres en Ires años (Deut. 26.}, para el manlenimienlo délos levitas ó ministros <strong>de</strong>l templo, y para asistir á los estranjeros, las viudas y los huérfanos. Cumplido este <strong>de</strong>ber, les proscribe Dios una especie <strong>de</strong> fórmula, por la cual so obligan solomnemonle dolante <strong>de</strong> él á no tener jamás otro Dios ni otro Señor; y Dios también les protesta haberles elegido para que sean su pueblo particular y ia nación privilegiada. La segunda está tomada <strong>de</strong>l mismo libro, en la que pro" mete Dios á su pueblo, que si es fiel en observar el precepto que le ha impuesto do amar al Señor su Dios, marchar por todos sus caminos, y <strong>de</strong> estar inviolablcmenlo adherido á su servicio, esterminará á su visla todas las naciones mas po<strong>de</strong>rosas y mas fuertes que él, y lo pondrá en posesión <strong>de</strong>l pais que ellas babilaban; y <strong>de</strong>spués <strong>de</strong> baberle hecho rico y po<strong>de</strong>roso , le hará formidable á toda la tierra. (Dcuter. 11.) Todas estas recompensas materiales no eran mas que la figura <strong>de</strong> las recompensas espirituales prometidas al pueblo <strong>de</strong> la nueva alianza, á esta uacicn sania, que son los cristianos. La tercera lección está sacada <strong>de</strong>l segundo libro <strong>de</strong> los Macabcos: contiene la oración que los sacerdotes <strong>de</strong>spués <strong>de</strong> la vui'lta <strong>de</strong> la cautividad <strong>de</strong> Babilonia hicieron á Dios con Nohcmías, durante el sacrificio que consumía ol fuego sagrado, que se habia ocultado en el hondo <strong>de</strong> un pozo ánles <strong>de</strong> la cautividad, y que so habia vuelto una agua lodosa y espesa ; la cual, habiendo sido <strong>de</strong>rraimula sobro la leña y la víctima que se habia colocado sobro el altar, se convirtió milagrosamente cu fuego luego que salió ol sol. Mientras el fuego milagroso consumia el sacrificio, Nehemías, Jonatás y los <strong>de</strong>más sacerdotes hacian la oración contenida en osla tercera lección. La cuarta está lomada <strong>de</strong>l libro <strong>de</strong>l Eclesiáslico, en don<strong>de</strong> el aulor <strong>de</strong> este libro dirige á Dios una fervorosa oración para suplicarle que so compa<strong>de</strong>zca <strong>de</strong> su pueblo afligido, disperso, y en todas partos mallratado. Cuando el aulor <strong>de</strong>l libro <strong>de</strong>l Eclesiástico escribía, oslaba la nación judía dispersa en Egipto, en la Siria y en todas las provincias <strong>de</strong> Oriente, y aun los mismos que estaban en Judca y en Jerusalcn eran oprimidos por los príncipes vecinos bajo quienes estaban subyugados. Como todas eslas adversida<strong>de</strong>s eran la figura do las que <strong>de</strong>bian afligir algún dia á los fieles, la Iglesia renueva á Dios las mismas oraciones por lodos sus hijos. La quinta, quo es la úllima <strong>de</strong> las que se loman <strong>de</strong>l antiguo Testamento, está sacada <strong>de</strong>l profeta Daniel, y refiere la maravilla <strong>de</strong> los tres niños hebreos, quo arrojados en un horno ardiendo, por haber sido fieles á Dios, hallaron rofrigorio en medio do las llamas, y cantaron allí las alabanzas <strong>de</strong> Dios, que la Iglesia repite aquí en esta lección. En fio, la sexta, quo es propiamente la Epístola <strong>de</strong> la misa <strong>de</strong> esto dia, es una instrucción que el apóstol san Pablo da á los cristianos do Tesalónica en la primera caria quo íes escribe, y con motivo do ellos á lodos los fieles. Puedo.<strong>de</strong>cirse que es un compendio <strong>de</strong> toda la moral <strong>de</strong> Jesucristo, y el resumen mas suave <strong>de</strong> la doctrina <strong>de</strong>l Evangelio. «Corregid á los chismosos,» los dice: el apóstol habla <strong>de</strong> aquellos espíritus inquietos, orgullosos, (urbulenlos, que no pue<strong>de</strong>n vivir en repoeo ni <strong>de</strong>jar vivir en él á los <strong>de</strong>más; que introducen la disensión en las socieda<strong>de</strong>s mas santas, <strong>de</strong> las cuales son el azote ; gentes do partido, susceptibles <strong>de</strong> lodos los errores , y que parecen no haber nacido sino para sembrar en todas p.irtes la l\- zaña, la división y ol cisma. «Sufrid á los flacos» y á los imperfectos; «consolad á aquellos que se <strong>de</strong>saniman» ^ visla <strong>de</strong> las menores diliculia<strong>de</strong>s. La caridad que <strong>de</strong>be trfte racleri/ar á todos los cristianos es paciente, compasiva, todo lo sufre, no es aceptadora <strong>de</strong> personas. No hay ani-
