ANTI-COMMUNIST STRUCTURES IN THE
COUNTY OF BIHOR: ORGANIZATION OF
INDEPENDENT ROMANIA (1947-1950)

Abstract: The anticommunist group The Organization of Independent Romania was among the
most active ones in Bihor between 1947 and 1950. It was certainly constituted sometime in late
1947 and in the spring of 1948; its existence was precisely highlighted by the Security as having
the centre in Oradea. Its first leader was Nistor Bădiceanu. The nucleus of this structure was
formed by approximately twenty young men, all having around twenty years. The lack of
experience of the members, caused mainly by their youth, led to the arrestment of several of them.
As a result of the partially discovery of its clandestine activity, some of the leaders of the
organization led by Nistor Bădiceanu were captured and arrested in June 1948. After ten month of
inquiry in Security’s arrest from Oradea and Cluj, on the 24th of March 1949, the group was
judged by the Military Court of Cluj. The punishments they received were very harsh and varied
between two and six years.
After the communist-regime installation in Romania, a series of anti-communist
resistance centres took shape. In general, the mountain areas facilitated the proliferation
of these groups; however their existence was more or less ephemeral, a consequence of
the fact that they were systematically hunted by the new political regime from
Bucharest.
Today, more than a decade and a half since the events of December 1989, the Romanian
historiography offers us a quite complex and rich image on the resistance movements
against the regime, from various regions of Romania, however less on the ones from the
area of Bihor, although they are not entirely lacking 2 . Nevertheless, the West of the
country entered in the circuit of the organized anti-communist movements. The novel
archive information allow us to certainly state that several resistance groups unfolded
here their activity. In Bihor, the years we discuss about, at least four such organizations
existed.
