Milen MIHOV: Democratic Macedonia– Outside` the Grasp of Tito 267
In April 2012 Ali Ahmeti, leader of the Albanian party which is part of the country’s
coalition government, presented a draft law for the rights of the former political prisoners
and the repressed in Macedonia between 1945 and 1991. It provides rehabilitation of the
convicted for “ideological and political reasons” by the Military and the People’s Court
of Tito’s Yugoslavia in order to guarantee their social rights and compensate for the
suffering incurred. The ruling party of the Prime-minister Nikola Gruevski met the
initiative with reservations. Speaking to the media he states that the project was far too
‘utopian” and difficult to apply. According to the Government the reason lies in the fact
that most of those who fought for independent Macedonia were convicted with charges
for ‘terrorism, destruction of public order or been described as “vanchomihailovists” i.e.
Bulgarians [xviii].
