Remembrance in Time
On the 21 st of June 1949, the preparations began for applying the agreed action plan on
the field. The head of the Organization Independent Romania, Vasile Furtoş, in a
conspiracy meeting in Teodor Molnar’s house from Chiraleu, member of the
organization, decided to constitute the so-called sacrifice teams, which will circulate
through all villages for launching the action itself. In the meeting, several leaders of the
movement participated, who took their commitment they would go where they would be
ordered to and that they would adequately fulfil the plans. The second day, however,
Vasile Furtoş was arrested by the Security 11 . His confinement immediately after the
meeting and the acquaintance with the details of the discussions in Teodor Molnar’s
house indicated a traitor’s presence at the meting.
On the spot, the action seemed compromised. Under these conditions, on the 25 th of July
1949, at home at Nistor Pop from Sărsig, a few leaders of the organizations met. They
decided to postpone launching the action for the 1 st of August 1949. Every action group
was organized. In the first phase, 5 groups with 10 people were to exist, with the special
mission of launching the actions in all villages. The action started therefore with circa 50
people, whereto the village inhabitants had to join. In these sacrifice groups, inclusively
students on holidays were part 12 . They had to ensure the guard of the upraised villages,
through constituting pickets on the border of the localities so that, in the case of the
apparition of the repression forces, the villagers should be informed and, to the extent of t
he possibilities, to resist until the arrival of the reinforcement from the menaced
settlements.
The circumstances made that on the 1 st of August 1949 the action launch were taken
ahead so that, on the 27 th -28 th of July 1949, it should be in full development in the Northeast
of the county, and the member of the Organization Independent Romania should be
in the middle of the subsequent violent events. There is about launching peasant riots
caused by the initiation of the agriculture-collectivization process in early March 1949
and everything that followed in the direction of the destruction of the Romanian village.
13 . The arrestment following these events led to Vasile Furtos and several members of the
Organization Independent Romania being incarcerated. From this moment, it disappeared
from the scenery of the Romanian anti-Communist resistance.
