MEMORY, RESPECT AND OPENNESS -
EVENT ORGANIZED IN
FĂGĂRAŞ – SÂMBĂTA, ROMANIA

Abstract: The paper aim is to do a short description of the actions developed in the frame of the
event organized in Romania and sustained by the European project “OPENNESS- Past Memory
for a Future Open Society". This event, organized in the period 1 – 6 August 2012 by Negru Vodă
Cultural Foundation of Făgăraş, Transilvania University of Brasov, Casa Mureşenilor Museum of
Braşov, Civil Society Associaton, comprised many activities, all developed under the slogan
Memory, Respect and Openness, involving the citizens and young people in reflecting upon the
causes and the consequences yielded by the values destruction and distortion during the period of
the communist regime set within East-European countries.
Introduction
The event held between 1-6 August, 2012 in Romania, and supported by the European
project "OPENNESS - Past Memory for a Future Open Society", was a complex one,
including:
- The International Symposium with the topic “Communist Regimes – Recent
Memory for an Open Society” held in Făgăraş and at the Constantin Brâncoveanu
Academy in Sâmbăta de Sus;
- The summer school, organized as a workshop and documentation visits, the
participants being invited people of the Symposium and pupils and students from
Făgăraş and Braşov;
- The itinerant exhibition "Memory, Respect, Openness” launching.
To these activities have participated professors, historians, curators, witnesses of the
terror during the communist regime instauration, and descendants of those who suffered
from the terror during the communist regime instauration, in total, 59 local partners, 10
partners from Bulgaria, 7 from Hungary, 7 from Germany and 5 guests from Moldova.
International Symposium with the topic “Communist Regimes – Recent Memory for
an Open Society”
The Symposium was held between 1-3 August, 2012. On 1-st August, 2012, took place
the opening of the Symposium, organized in Făgăraş city, at the Festive Hall (Room Diet)
