Tite Artifact Piece
La performance The Artifact Piece, réalisée par James Luna en 1987, peut être considé­
rée comme la première œuvre d'art à détourner la représentation des cultures amérindiennes
de manière aussi radicale. Incarnant avec force le caractère faux et stéréotypé de ce que 1 'on
considère comme étant amérindien, elle a créé un précédent dans les arts autochtones. Dans
Emendatio, la seule monographie consacrée à James Luna, Je fondateur du National Museum
of the American lndian, W. Richard West, écrit (Lowe et Smith, 2005, p. 7):
With his seminal1987 work, The Artifact Piece, Luna invented a new way of
presenting the meaning of "lndianness" to the world. Evoking, and sending
up, the near-naked mannequins in their dioramas that have historically served
as representations of Native cultures in anthropology museums and other institutions,
Luna lay motionless for long stretches of time in an exhibition case
at the San Diego Museum of Man. Baffled, or indifferent, or unseeing, museum
visitors came and went around him, and thus in one, brilliant, ironie
stroke, Luna the human "artifact" had altered dramatically and forever the relationship
between lndians and those who visit, study, patronize, and in other
ways interact with Native Peoples 39 .
Dans la même publication, réalisée pour la participation de Luna à la Biennale de Venise en
2005, Paul Chaat Smith renchérit (ibid. p. 35 ; Chaat Smith, 2009, p. 95/ 0 :
Few works of contemporary lndian art have been so perfectly conceived and
executed. Outrageous and brilliant, The Artifact Piece rumbled across lndian
Country in the late 1980s like a quiet earthquake, making fine work by other
Native artists suddenly look obsolete and timid. Luna's first masterpiece
raised the stakes so high that the air that previously enveloped lndian contemporary
art, for so long stifling and self-satisfied, turned thin and bracing.
