La foule qui se presse, composée de diacres, de marins, d’hommes nus, de cavaliers, de filles, de prêtres est « émerveillée », bruyante, criante, hurlante, est cruelle. Elle remplit l’église et descend « l’escalier usé qui aboutit à la crypte » (NATM, 85). La description des sacrifices accomplis, sacrifices de taureaux, de cerfs, d’humains permet l’entrelacement de thèmes fantastiques divers 435 . Le narrateur fait apparaître la correspondance entre les fêtes humaines et les manifestations de la nature : Ceux-ci [les sacrifices] ont lieu dans une sorte d’immense théâtre qui avait fait partie, jadis, d’une ville magnifique, détruite par un raz-de-marée, un tremblement de terre, ou une éruption de volcan, peut-être tout cela en même temps, car les éléments sont amis et la terre invite volontiers l’eau et le feu à ses fêtes sinistres. (NATM, 82) Il insiste sur « l’exhalaison du sang », « l’odeur fade et poignante du sang ». À la base de tous les sacrifices, le sang a été l’objet d’un culte répandu depuis les temps les plus anciens. Verser le sang est le signe d’une alliance entre l’homme et la divinité. La victime sacrificielle, le jeune Ansano, s’avance nue, et cette nudité prend une valeur magique. Le parcours du nu, la procession sont autant d’actes où le corps, selon René de Solier « doit vaincre les « puissances mauvaises » et éveiller les puissances fécondes » 436 . Une autre cérémonie est relatée par Graham. Elle se passe dans un autre pays, tropical, près d’un lac où l’on adore aussi une « Déesse Noire ». La description de cette fête permet le déploiement de tout un paysage fantastique dominé par la minéralité : Noire comme le basalte, l’eau du lac paraissait faite d’une bizarre qualité de matière solide sur laquelle les objets légers étaient posés et glissaient. Une pierre de la grosseur du poing prendrait une années, disait-on, à atteindre le fond, mais personne ne pouvait savoir à quelle profondeur était ce fond. (NATM, 87-88) L’eau est « d’une immobilité de métal », le lac possède une « calotte de boue devenue minérale », les poissons qui essaient de briser cette calotte se recouvrent « d’une écorce pareille à du fer » (NATM, 88). Au-delà du lac et des champs cultivés s’élèvent des « pentes rocheuses » dominées par les volcans. Les hommes s’y aventurent lorsqu’ils tentent de trouver « de rarissimes pierres, les plus rares de toutes les pierres, disait-on, que les volcans crachaient, de siècle en siècle, après les avoir cuites et recuites dans leurs ventres flamboyants » (NATM, 89). La métaphore du ventre est une variation sur le thème 435 Le Minotaure est souvent représenté comme un homme à tête de taureau. Le culte du taureau se développe dans des civilisations très anciennes, en particulier celles du bassin méditerranéen (voir à ce sujet Jean-Pierre Bayard, Labyrinthes, symboles et errances, Éditions du Huitième jour, 2010, p.29). Le cerf renvoie davantage à une mythologie nordique : « Les Celtes, à la suite de la culture pré-indo-européenne, ont célébré Cernunnos le « Bel Encorné » dans un symbolisme lunaire ».
